Life is full of important questions. Who should I marry? What should I choose as a career? Where should I live? Big Mac or Whopper? Okay, that last one isn’t quite as serious of a question… not quite.
How about this one: what would happen if I died right now?
Let the question sink in for a moment. It’s not an easy one to think about. Maybe family comes to mind – what would my family do for money? Would they be okay? Maybe you think of your job – who would fill my role at work? Perhaps you think of things that would be left undone – I wish I had taken that trip, or spent more time with _____________; you fill in the blank.
These are fine things to consider, even healthy and necessary, but dig deeper. What would happen to your soul, the eternal part of you, if your body gave out while reading this?
If this question unsettles you, take heart! There is good news!
According to the Bible, there is a holy and loving God who created our universe and everything in it. He created humans in a sinless state to enjoy Him and His creation, but we humans, we don’t do perfect very well. Adam sinned in the Garden of Eden and by that one act sin entered the world. Because of that one act, we as humans have a sinful nature.
Here’s the problem: we’re sinful, God is holy. By His very nature He cannot commune with us in our sin. In our natural state, we are at odds with the God of the universe. That should be unsettling.
Here’s the solution: God sent his only Son, Jesus Christ, to Earth in human form. Jesus took on a frail human body, lived a perfect life, fulfilling God’s righteous requirement, and died on a cross as a perfect sacrifice for our sins. Jesus then rose from the dead and ascended to heaven to be with his Father. God offers redemption to us through the blood of his Son!
If we confess that we are sinful (that we could never keep God’s law to perfection and because of that we deserve punishment), and if we put our faith in Christ’s sacrifice to cover over our sin, God offers eternal life with Him.
There is nothing we could ever do to earn this. God’s righteous requirement is found in the 10 Commandments. Have you ever lied? I have – just telling one lie makes me a liar. Have you ever taken God’s name in vain? I have, and many times – that makes me a blasphemer.
Those are just two of the 10 Commandments. If we examined them all, we would find ourselves falling far short of God’s requirement, which, simply put, is perfection. No one can say, “I’ve kept God’s law perfectly.” No one, that is, except Jesus. That’s why his sacrifice on the cross can cover over all of our sins if we only confess our sins and believe that Jesus is the way to the Father.
Then it gets cool.
The Bible says that when we believe on Christ, he makes us “new creatures.” The old sinful nature has passed away and we now live for God. We still sin, but the punishment for our sin is no longer an eternity separated from God. We have the confidence that if we confess our sins, God is faithful to forgive and restore us to a right relationship with himself.
What would happen to your soul if your body gave out right now? Please consider the question.
